A fellow mail artist sent me this idea. She called it the "3 - Scrapper Collage" and I thought it was a fantastic multi-media collage exercise. I was told that this is a great way to help with an art block. I have modified her directions a bit. For this swap: Step I. Gather up trash scrap papers from all around the house and put them in a grab bag (I use a plastic bag). Size does not matter just collect all kinds, shapes and colors of scrap paper randomly. Step II. Close your eyes. Draw three pieces of scrap paper from your scrap bag randomly. (Use a scarf or rag tied around your eyes if you have the temptation to peak). No peaking! Step III. Open your eyes and look at your scraps. Don't like them? Too Bad! No replacing allowed. Step V. Make what you think is the most interesting collage possible from those particular scraps. Tearing, folding and so on is encouraged. Size is not mandatory and is up to the artist. In the picture above the mini-mixes are about 1" x 2" and 2.5" x 1.5". Step VI. In the end, if the collage is dull due to lack of value or contrast, do a bit of inking or painting on the edges or wherever to create more interest for your collage (no additional paper scraps allowed). See photo for examples. Send one mini-mix to your partner. Mount the mini-mix for presentation (perhaps on an ATC or something similar). Include a note about what you thought of the exercise and some pleasantries. Happy mini-mixing! Must be a member in good standing of the group, with no recent unexplained low ratings.
