Description:

I have been trying to find a small accordion file to help with my envelope budgeting system. Something about the size of a dollar bill, so I don't have loose envelopes all over or that I'm rifling through.

I can't find one to buy and since I'm trying to save money with the system, making one seemed ideal. Then I thought there must be other people in the same boat and how fun would it be to enjoy someone else's creativity while taking care of business.

So, here's the swap - make your partner one profile based accordion folder with at least 8 pockets and no more than 12. Profile based is more for decoration then format, but if you have a special request please put it in the comments. But please be reasonable and if you receive a well-made accordion file with at least 8 pockets, you should rate a 5.

The file should be large enough to fit a dollar bill, but not much larger.

I found some ideas, but please feel free to be creative. It should be small enough to easily fit into a purse or bag though - like I mentioned, something that's just right for cash. These ideas may be different sizes - they are just for construction technique.

From A2 Envelopes

Basic Instructions This one is from Martha Stewart so you think it'd be snazzier, but it is good instructions for a base. It's in the article, I promise, just scroll down and the picture has a blue envelope file.

Recycled Folder This one doesn't actually have pockets but it seems to be good instructions for a sturdy container. Maybe combine it with the pockets above?

I'm excited to see what you all come up with! Please feel free to share more ideas in the comments.

Since this is pretty time intensive, must have a 4.98+ rating. No recent 1s or 3s. Must have a filled out profile and I will determine newbies on a combination of profile, ratings, and number of Type 2 & 3 swaps. I will also ban if I sense people who are negative or if it just doesn't feel right.

I couldn't find instructions for this, so it's not a swap requirement, but I would love some sort of tab so I can easily tell which pocket I'm wanting to access. It's not something I would rate down or even withhold a heart for, just a wishlist thing. And if you find instructions for tabs, please share so we can all benefit!

You can make tabs pretty easily with a die or punch. And if you have a WRMK punch board to make envelopes, you can make tabs. There are instructions online.

I just want to make sure that we can vary the size a bit? The instructions (A2) leaves you with rather small finished file measuring 4 1/4" x 2 1/2" which would limit what you put into it. I was think more like a $bill size or clipped coupon (I don't know the measurements) but am gonna shoot for that size and see what I come up with before joining.

@lady41701 The links were just examples of basic construction. I intended for them to be large enough for $ bills but not too large. I will try to clarify in the description.

@lady41701 - thanks for asking by the way, in reading it again I can see where there might have been confusing.

@thebragal - thanks for the tabs tip. If anyone has a punch, they might find that super helpful. I'd love to hear ideas too for those of us who don't have punches if anyone has suggestions.

Just a idea for tabs which is kind of a throw back to school days is to make your own without special tools by "cutting on the fold" like when you use to make paper hearts as a kid. This gives you an attached "mirror" image so that it is 2 sided and make a little longer little extensions to extend downward for attaching. Create the shape you want ( rectangle or curvy ect. and the length you want) then you can always use one for a pattern and trace the others to cut.
