Description:

Using various tutorials as inspiration, we are going to create mixed media, self-mailing, fold-a-notes. The technique of folding one page of paper into its own envelope is also known as a "Mennonite envelope". I am just going to dump out all the links first so they're in one spot and you can easily browse through them.

Links

So! Here's a run-down of what you'll do:

  1. Take a letter sized book or magazine page (something not flimsy) and on at least one side (what will end up being the inside) paint, stencil, splatter, scribble, stamp using whatever tools you like. You can do both sides of the paper if you want, but only one side is required. If you don't have a magazine or book page that you feel is strong enough, you can use an 8.5" x 11" piece of scrapbook paper.
  2. When your page is dry, fold it using the instructions linked above.
  3. Once your page is folded you'll have creases to use as guides. Go back, and focusing on what will be the inside of your envelope, add more artwork. As in the first and last 2 links listed above, we are aiming to make little vignettes. You will have a large rectangular area in which you can make a scene. It can be collage, drawing, stamping, calligraphy, whatever you wish (sender's choice). You can use the other spaces around this to say hello to your partner.
  4. When you are done with the inside, fold the page back into an envelope, seal, address & stamp it. It's ready to mail!

Clear as mud? I've done this before, so I'm biased by having practiced this already. Please, if something can be made more clear, just let me know.

We are moving back home so I'm going to have to drop out of this swap.... be back in August.... from my new craft room! Yea!

Just made a prototype this evening since I've never made one of these before. If anyone else is making the gelli version with a small plate, it takes a bit of extra skill to align the sections up. Also, I know the envelope folds up completely, but we're still allowed to glue or tape the outside to protect it in transit right?

Oh yes, definitely. Though you shouldn't need to tape it up as much as you might when sending an envelope that has something in it.

Thanks! I think I'm only going to use washi since it's repositionable / removable without damaging the paper. :)
