QnT Block Swap – Wacky Tiles #1

12-15-17 thru 1-8-18

--Wacky Tiles (is the name I’m calling this new block)

--3 partners

--make 2 blocks per instructions below (they will NOT look like the swap picture at this stage)

Prep Cutting:

2 different cuts of bright small print fabric to use as center of each block: 4 1/2”X4 1/2” square

For the colored strips cut them into strips 2 ½” wide by the length of fabric (you will need 4 to 8 different brightly colored strips of small print fabric or tone-on-tone)

For the white, off-white, or tone-on-tone white strips, cut them in 2½” wide by the length of the fabric (you will need 4 to 8 different whites)

Sewing block 1:

Start with one of the 4 ½”X 4 ½” brightly colored center squares pieces.

Sew one of the white strips all the way around the center piece.

Next sew one of the bright colored strips around the outside of the white and continue rotating white then bright until you have 4 square rings around the center square.

Sewing block 2:

Start with the second 4 ½” X 4 1/2” brightly colored center piece square.

This time start by sewing a different bright color around the outside of the center square then a white strip until you have 4 rings around the second center square (strips will be assembled in reversed order from block 1)

--cut each of the 2 blocks into 4 equal and even pieces

---send one piece of each block to each of your 3 partners (each partner will get 2 pieces from you)

--keep the remaining two pieces for yourself (one from each block)

--when the pieces arrive from your partners you can add them with the 2 pieces you kept and assemble them into 2 completed blocks There are two important things to remember when doing these blocks, sew as accurately as you can a ¼” seam allowance on all seams. Secondly, be very careful when cutting the block into 4 equal pieces.

If this swap gets lots of interest we will do it several times to accumulate enough for a project of our choosing.

Questions and concerns are welcome, please post a message below.

The blocks you send to your partner will NOT look like the swap picture. The swap-picture is what the blocks will look like once you receive from your partner and assemble their offerings with the 2 pieces you kept for yourself.

With the 2 pieces you saved for yourself and the packages you receive from your 3 partners you will have enough quarter units to make 2 complete blocks.

SEWING AROUND THE CENTER SQUARE: sew the first strip on to the top of the center square (4 1/2" will be the length) then cut the strip at the 4 1/2" to match the top of the center square, sew the bottom strip to the center square (4 1/2" will be the length) then cut, then do the same thing to the sides of the center square including the 2 strips you have added to the top and bottom - thish will cover the entire center square - center square will be outlined (circled if-you-will) in your first strip....continue with the other strip colors as well It would be much easier to show you because I am not great with words, but hopefully this will be clear enough to help.

questions are welcome, please let me know

scrappy look is what we are going for, so no there isn't any color scheme....except I would avoid gray, black, brown prints, and use bright prints - and then plain white or tone-on-tone white or a light cream or tan for the other strips.

as far as alternating the bright colors, mix them up for a wide variety, and I wouldn't use the same color twice in any block

block 1: bright center white bright strip white different bright strip

block 2: bright center bright strip white different bright strip white

block 1: bright center, white, bright strip, white, different bright strip

block 2: bright center, bright strip, white, different bright strip, white

cutting: DO NOT CUT FROM CORNER TO CORNER, cutting should be center of block on the top to bottom, and center of block from left to right we want to mail squares not triangles

---use one white print all the way around the center square the first time ----you may use a different white print for the next time you go around the block --variety is good in this --each circle around should be completed in the same print so that when we cut the block in 4 equal parts each of our partners will get the same thing from us --remember you will be keeping one cut from each of the 2 blocks for yourself, and sending one cut of each of the 2 blocks to each of your partners --I have not found a tutorial to add to the swap so I am hoping my instructions come together for you
