Description:

Last October, I did my first Eat Local Challenge and it really changed me. In November, I went back to eating whatever but for this December, I want to try it again and hear about the pursuits of others doing the challenge.

The challenge will run from Dec. 1-Dec. 31.

It will be an email at LEAST ONCE A WEEK and should include a story about the food you have in your area right now and the recipes you are trying, why you are doing this, and how many miles local is to you. If you can email your journey more often, then you deserve a heart.

I'm doing email to save a tree . If you would like to read my local food challenge story for this swap month, I would be happy to send you the journal entries that I will be sending to my partner. :)

So what exactly are we doing...It is very vague...

Mrs Rankin if you google "Eat local" it will explain the concept. Basically it is a way in which you can support your local economy by buying/consuming foodstuffs grown and raised close to your home. It also cuts down on the amount of fuel and emissions caused by transporting food from far distances.

For example: I live in VA - it is pretty cold here, but I am still able to purchase locally grown root vegetables. I would also frequent my local butcher to buy his locally raised beef and pork. I am able to purchase local milk and cheese. But if I wanted, say, oranges it wouldn't be "eating local" because VA cannot sustain oranges this time of year [or anytime of year for that matter] Also, many people have grown their own produce/meat throughout the year and canned or frozen it to have on hand over the winter.

The point is too cut down - but not cut out if you can't - your purchases of foodstuffs that come from a great distance.

I hope this helps. There are plenty of blogs and websites that explain it better.

@SkippyMom I think that @MrsRankin is not unclear on the concept of eating local, but rather she is unclear on the swap requirements. The swap description says "an email a day" but it doesn't say the time period in which it is expected that you will email your partner each day (is it every day from December 1 to December 31 or is it December 31 to some other date?). The description also says if every day is too hard, then update every couple days, and that email or snail mail may be acceptable; this makes the swap expectations even more unclear. I think the point of having a set swap description is that the terms of the swap will not need to be determined individually between partners. If I misunderstood you, @MrsRankin I do apologize.

Sorry that you found my swap description vague. I was trying to make the swap as easy as possible b/;c I know that eating local is enough of a challenge!! I would like to thank Skippy Mom for the great blurb and helpful ideas about eating local.

As for the swap requirements: I want the swap to be an email a day. I understand this is hard for some people so that is why I put that you could send out a few entries perhaps what went on Monday and Tuesday in a Wednesday email. I don't want someone to not get a 5 b/c they missed an email on a swap that lasted a month. That would be terrible.

Please ask more questions and thank you for joining my swap! Go green and Go Local! xxoo Tia :)

Awesome, thanks ladies!

Oh, oneofthosegirls - I saw the sentence "What are we doing" - as opposed to "How are we supposed to do this" and assumed [as I am sure you did in your own way] that Mrs. Rankin meant What was the point, not How is it to run.

I, too, apologize to Mrs. Rankin if that isn't what she meant. I hope you all enjoy the swap. It sure is a great one!

Have a great holiday season.
