Dear Georgettes, Trade in the East Indies not only brought exquisite fabrics and exotic spices to Great Britain, but also many new flavours and dishes. Curries were being made in England in the early 19th century, the first Curry house opening in London in 1810. Jane Austen was no stranger to “Currie”, the recipe for curry powder as well as one to make a curry dish. appear in Martha Lloyd’s Home book, Martha having living with Jane, her mother and sister, after the death of her father, and later marrying Francis Austen, Jane’s younger brother. For this swap, let us experience a new taste. We will make a curry, using the recipe in this link: https://blogs.sydneylivingmuseums.com.au/cook/a-curious-curree-a-taste-of-jane-austen-at-elizabeth-farm/ Once your curry is made, snap a photo and email it to your partner along with your impressions of the taste. This is an email swap, no need to send your image through the post. A big thank you to Toni for suggesting this swap! Any questions, let us know, we are always happy to assist. NOTE Ginger may be substituted for galangal. |
