CAW! It's your local bird woman, here with another Greek Mythology swap -- harpies!

What is a แผ…ฯฯ€ฯ…ฮนฮฑ? Once simply personifications of the wind, harpies were lady-faced, bird-bodied, violent and cruel MFers who snatched immoral nogoodniks and ne'er-do-wells in their talons and brought them to torture -- first as agents of the Erinyes, then as guardians of Tartarus. Someone go missing? Harpy. Food go missing? Harpy. Being tortured in the seventh ring of Hell? Harpy. Beautiful bird woman came to you in a vision? That's a personal problem and beyond my pay grade, but I'm happy to direct you to resources.

Like many mythological creatures, harpy descriptions vary (as does their role over time, of course) -- while the classic harpy has a bird body and a woman's face (sometimes ugly, sometimes fair maidens), others, like Hyginus, simply imagined breasts on a bird. No judgment, we've all been there. Also like other mythological contemporaries, similar entities existed in other cultures. Check out some bird ladies here.

For this swap, be as creative as you'd like in depicting your harpy! If you combine a human and a bird, you're good. Here are some more links for inspo:

Why not take a second to learn about the harpy eagle, the largest raptor in the Americas?. Just because.

Can't get enough of scary birds? A journalist FOIA requested the investigation of the mail carrier who bravely struck dead a wild turkey. His use of force was determined justified. Scroll down and there are actual scans of the report.

Rules

  • 1 ATC for 1 partner, extras not necessary but not actively discouraged

  • standard ATC rules: 2.5" x 3.5", sturdy backing, send in a protective sleeve. Please include the swap name, your username, and the date on the back. I think it's also fun to sign them/receive them signed, but this is not required. If you do not sign, please write your first name and last initial as well.

  • make sure the harpy is hand-made by you in some way. Any medium is acceptable, and the background can include collage elements, be totally hand-drawn, etc. Please take your time and make something you'd like to receive!

  • portrait or landscape orientation are both acceptable

  • 4 weeks to create and send, though because this is not profile-based, you may start early and ship it out once you have your partner!

  • please rate a 5 if the card you receive meets the requirements. Give a heart if you love it.

  • if there is any chance your envelope exceeds one ounce or will get classed as a small first class package, please make sure you add sufficient postage. Similarly, please make sure you pay the non-machinable surcharge if your envelope is uneven or rigid (you won't be rated on this, but the best chance the card will arrive safely is worth it!)

  • If you will be late for any reason, please message both me and your partner as soon as you can. MM&L always angels for flaked swaps. If you have an emergency, take care of it and we'll work it out after.

Please message me directly with any questions. Happy swapping!
