🌎💌 World Postcard Day — Send a Postcard!

Happy World Postcard Day! 🎉

October 1st is World Postcard Day, a celebration of that tiny little piece of paper that somehow manages to travel across the world and make someone's mailbox a little more exciting.

A little postcard history: the postcard officially made its debut on October 1, 1869, when Austria-Hungary introduced the Correspondenz-Karte. More than 150 years later, postcards are still doing their thing! 📬

World Postcard Day grew out of the 150th anniversary of the postcard in 2019, when Postcrossing helped organize celebrations around the world. Following that celebration, Postcrossing and Finepaper launched World Postcard Day in 2020, making October 1st an annual day to celebrate postcards and the connections they create.

You can learn more about WPD and the postcard's history here! https://worldpostcardday.com/

If you are also on Postcrossing, they will have the Postcard Lounge live! You can join and write cards with others from around the world throughout the day <3

So let's celebrate the Swap-bot way: BY SENDING SOME MAIL. 💌

✨ THE SWAP

You will have 5 partners and will send ONE postcard to EACH partner — that's 5 postcards total! 📬📬📬📬📬

There is NO postcard theme for this swap. Send whatever postcard you think your partners will enjoy!

Your postcards can be:

  • 🏙️ A city or travel postcard
  • 🌸 A cute/artsy postcard
  • 🐈 An animal postcard
  • 🎨 An art or illustration postcard
  • 🌎 A postcard from your area
  • 👻 A weird postcard
  • 💀 A delightfully unhinged postcard
  • 💌 Literally anything from your stash!

🚨 ONE IMPORTANT EXPECTATION:

DO NOT SEND AN OFFICIAL WORLD POSTCARD DAY POSTCARD.

The official World Postcard Day cards are awesome, but this swap is specifically about celebrating postcards without using the official WPD design. Please choose literally any other postcard! Many swappers use other sites to send cards and will receive and send tons of these throughout October. Let's use others we have around!

📅 THIS IS A QUICK SWAP!

Because World Postcard Day is October 1st, we're going to make this swap happen FAST.

  • Sign-ups close: September 30
  • Partners assigned: October 1 — World Postcard Day! 🌎💌
  • Write your postcards: October 1
  • Send your postcards: October 2 or 3
  • ABSOLUTE send-by deadline: October 3

Once partners are posted on October 1st, grab 5 postcards, write a little something on each, slap on some stamps, and get those babies into the mail. 📮

Please only sign up if you can commit to the quick turnaround! This swap is intentionally speedy so that we're all celebrating World Postcard Day by actually writing & sending postcards on World Postcard Day!

💌 WHAT TO WRITE?

No complicated prompt! Tell your partner about yourself, where you're from, why you picked the postcard, what you're currently obsessed with, what you're doing for World Postcard Day, or literally just say hello.

📬 SWAP-BOT EXPECTATIONS

Please follow normal Swap-bot etiquette:

  • Send 5 postcards total — one to each partner.
  • Send them by the October 3 deadline.
  • Make sure your Swap-bot username/swap name is identifiable somewhere on the card.
  • Rate your partners after receiving their postcards.
  • If something comes up and you cannot complete the swap, please communicate with your partners and/or the swap host.
  • Most importantly: SEND THE POSTCARDS! 😂

Let's celebrate World Postcard Day by putting a whole bunch of postcards back into circulation and giving five random people a little something fun to find in their mailbox. 🌎💌📮

Happy World Postcard Day!

How fun! A lot of us design our own WPD cards for the occasion (instead of the official WPD design), are we allowed to use those, or can we only use cards that are not WPD related?
