Description:

Have you ever heard of “Vernacular Photography”? It’s a term for snapshot photography done by the average person. Not artists or professionals. Those grainy, goofy old photos laying around of people you don’t remember doing wacky things with weird hairdos…or stuff like that. I’d like to include antique photos here too. Those would be fun to receive also.

Let’s swap vintage or antique photos. Please remember that these are actual photographs, not copies. And mail them in an envelope please. Please send an interesting photo. This is senders choice, so you may get something totally unexpected.

You will be sending one photo to two partners. If you have extras and want to send more, go ahead and do so, but only expect to receive one photo as that is all that’s required.

You must have a complete profile filled out. I will drop anyone with a questionable history. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

I have a couple of really cool antique photos that were flaking off the metal (tintypes?) so I had to copy them, and now only have those copies. If they are well printed on quality photo paper, are they suitable?

Although your reproductions sound lovely, I don't think that they would be suitable for this one-of-a-kind original photo swap.

What do you consider vintage? 80's, 70's, 60's, before?

MichelleZ 12/29/2009 #

Good question TeaNi.
Many photographs do not have dates on them and its often difficult to determine the exact time era that they originated. For this swap, I would consider anything "out-of-date, old, outmoded, or antique" to be vintage. I realize that the word, vintage may mean different things to different people. It is senders choice.

So reproductions of old photos are not okay for this swap? The only old photos that I have that I would part with are some I've bought at yard sales (included in photograph albums). I collect postcards and keep them in photograph albums. I wouldn't know who the subjects were. How about polaroids?

Correct....reproductions of old photos are not okay for this swap. Its not necessary to know who the people are in the photograph, so those photos you picked up at the yard sales would be ideal. And Polaroids are awesome.
