Description:

ATC's are all about trying new things, right? For this swap, I wanted to get out of my crafting "comfort zone" and get everyone to try something new. My son is trying watercolors now as a less-messy alternative to acrylic paints, so why not watercolor?

For this swap, you will be creating a watercolor painting and turning it into a series of two ATC's for two partners.

First thing to do is create your painting. You will need a sheet of watercolor paper and a set of paints. I am not concerned about the quality of your paints (use the kids set if that's what you like!) but the paper needs to be reasonably heavy to avoid wrinkling when you paint on it. If you cannot find watercolor paper, heavy somewhat textured cardstock will work. The paper needs to be at least 3"x 8" to have room to paint and turn it into two ATC's.

So, go paint a picture, anything that catches your fancy. Flowers, turtles, abstract wiggles - go nuts. It doesn't have to be a materpiece - this is not being graded, people. Try different techniques. There's a good website here.

Once your painting is finished and dry, cut two 2.5x3.5 sections out of the painting. You will need two ATC-size pieces of cardboard (cereal boxes work well) as well. Mount the itty bitty painting on the cardboard. I would recommend mounting them even though the watercolor paper is kind of heavy just to give added stability.

Now you have two watercolor ATC's. Feel free to add some pen and ink or additional embellishment to the card, or just label the back and send it as is.

This swap is open to everyone with a well-filled-out profile, but please be mindful of your partner and don't flake. If I have problems with you during this swap, I will ban you from my future swaps.

Please message me or leave a comment if you have any questions.

I am leaving lots of time for this swap so don't feel like you have to rush your work. Take your time, do several paintings if you like, treat yourself to a relaxing afternoon painting dinosaurs or doodlebugs.

I will also be posting additional links and help over at our group, ATC's for N00bs, so feel free to join and have fun with us trying new things and making wee-bitty pieces of art!

You want us to wrap watercolor paper around more watercolor paper? The site with the example used thin paper to wrap a card...seems pretty difficult to wrap watercolor paper around anything....

regular watercolor paper is pretty sturdy. I usually just glue mine down to a cardstock back, but most seem to just send the watercolor paper as-is.

It seemed like a good idea when I was woking this out. Forgive me - will edit when I get home.

Is it OK to make 2 separate ATCs? I have bristol board ATCs. Also 2 for 2 partners for a total of 4? or one to 2 partners?

Make two, one to each partner. I didn't want to put too much work on anyone. If you feel like doing more, go for it. As for just doing separate cards instead of a larger sheet first then cutting it down, I wanted to give people a larger area to work with while trying out a new (to many of us) art form.

Oohh quite excited!, i have not done watercolours in more than 20yrs, been thinking of giving it a try again, this is the ideal opportunity,

So I wonder is that if I paint the 3' X 8' a big apple and I should cut it in half and send to two different partner? Is that how it works? I just brought a set of water colour, brushes and also the water colour paper.. I am going to do it!

Yeah, petty much. I also figured doing a large painting and cutting the cards out of it would add a bit of visual interest - like a close-up.
