Description:

When you finally tasted Turkish Delight for the first time, did you think of Edmund Pevensie and how its powerful enchantment caused him to betray his family? There are many specific foods associated with children's books, and you've probably at least wondered what butter beer tastes like, or whether a blackbird pie really is just as a good as a chicken one.

For this swap, you will create a booklet filled with recipes inspired by children's books. Try to make selections that are strongly associated with the books you've chosen, and please be sure these are foods the characters would have actually eaten or are somehow referenced in the book. (eg raspberry cordial, green pumpkin pie, lamb stew with dried plums, etc.) The recipes can either be ones you've adapted from a cookbook or found elsewhere (please credit source if so) or original ones you've concocted on your own. Do include at least one recipe you've already tried/made yourself.

Booklets should:

  • be printed on a computer or neatly handwritten and folded or bound into a booklet style of your choice
  • include illustrations of your choice
  • include at least 4 recipes with an ingredients list and concise, easy to follow instructions
  • include with each recipe a reference to the book upon which it is based
  • be sent with a a short note explaining why you chose the recipes and how you came up with or found them.

Since we are an international group, you may use the measurement system that is utilized in your own country. Upon receipt of your recipes, you can use this handy converter to figure out the measurements for your own kitchen if necessary.

Please do make sure the recipes are neatly presented in an attractive way. The booklets and recipes are sender's choice, so feel free to choose selections that you'd especially like to share with your partners. You will create two booklets to send and receive two delightful recipe booklets in return!

Let's make this really fun. :) There are 6 references to specific children's books in the swap above. The first person who correctly lists all 6 books (or series, doesn't have to be the specific book) in the comments below will receive a small children's book-based profile surprise!

The clues:

Turkish Delight
Butter Beer
Blackbird Pie
Raspberry Cordial
Green Pumpkin Pie
Lamb Stew with Dumplings

Bonus Clue:

"Eat Me, Drink Me"

I don't know them all but if I can help out the next person...? Turkish Delight = The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe Butter Beer = Harry Potter series Blackbird Pie=Mother Goose Rhyme (Sing a Song of Sixpence) Raspberry Cordial = Anne of Green Gables, I think? Eat Me, Drink Me = Alice Through the Looking Glass (or is this a trick clue?)

I'm out. ;-) But that was fun. What a great swap idea.

Sorry about the formatting. :-\

Green Pumpkin Pie = Little House on the Prairie

Lamb Stew = The Children's Book by A.S. Byatt?

thehappyhoneybee 02/23/2011 #

Nice guesses! I was thinking of a different book for blackbird pie, but I like your answer as well. Lamb stew isn't quite right, though....

thehappyhoneybee 02/23/2011 #

Ack! That should be Lamb Stew with Dried Plums listed above, not dumplings. Apologies for the error. This is much more specific, so...any guesses now? :)

BigHillGoddess 02/24/2011 #

Blackbird Pie from one of the Little House books? Sorry, brain is not at full function yet after having a fever for 5 days, so can't remember which one.

Lamb Stew w/ Plums from The Hunger Games

BigHillGoddess 02/24/2011 #

Little Town on the Prairie, wasn't it?

thehappyhoneybee 02/25/2011 #

Yes on both counts @BHG ! Blackbirds plump enough to cook in their own fat.

Since we had three people contributing to the answers, we will have to have three small surprises go to @Ogma @Oreon and @BigHillGoddess :) Thanks for playing, ladies! I can't wait to see the recipes everyone comes up with.
