QNT Black & white & colorful all over Round #1

7-16-18 thru 8-8-18

--1 partner

--2 different blocks to your partner

--red prints for round #1

I have been wanting to make this colorful quilt for a little while so I am hoping others will want to as well.

This block series will be a great way to use up some small scraps of fabrics from our stash, or you can go buy more fabric in quarter yard cuts..…you have my permission!

Each month we will exchange 2 different blocks with one partner, and keep 2 blocks for ourselves.

Please note that the instructions below are for ONE block only, you will have to repeat it 4 times to get the suggested 2 different blocks to send and 2 blocks to keep.

*use 1/4 inch seam allowance to end up with a 8 1/2 inch block

Bright colored prints are best for the border fabrics. This series we will use print fabrics only, no solids. Small prints work better for these blocks than large prints.

Cutting instructions for one block:

Cut 2 different black and white prints into rectangles: 2 ½” X 4 ½”

Cut 6 red prints into rectangles: 2 ½” X 4 ½” (the sample picture was assembled with 4 to 6 different red prints)

Assembly per block:

  1. Sew the 2 black and white prints together to create center of the block. (assemble on the 4 ½ inch side, NOT at the end of 2 ½” side.) This creates your center. Press seams.

  2. Attach a red print rectangle to each end of center block. (lay center block on the table with the 4 ½” side closest to you) Attach one red print rectangle to each end on the left and right. Press.

  3. Sew 2 red rectangles together end-to-end on the 2 1/2“sides making a long rectangle. Repeat with the other 2 red rectangles. Attach one of these units to the top and one to the bottom of the block. Press.

I hope my instructions are clear, and if they are not, please let me know. I love to look at an assembled block as my example so you can look at the picture on this swap to see what you will end up with.

FUTURE ROUNDS our black and white centers will have:

ROUND # 2 blue print borders

ROUND # 3 green print borders

ROUND # 4 yellow print borders

ROUND # 5 purple print borders

ROUND # 6 pink print borders

ROUND # 7 orange print borders

Have fun and swap-on!

I love this idea and can't wait to get started! Just checking my math, the blocks come out to be 8 and a half inches, right?

sherheart 06/23/2018 #

I was wondering what the block size is also.

@sherheart

I started a couple of these yesterday and am almost finished. I will finish them up tonight and let you know the finished size. I am using a 1/4 inch seam allowance - these go together very quickly. It took me longer to decide on which fabrics I want to use. I already have enough black and white 2 1/2" by 4 1/2" pieces cut for the next 3 or 4 rounds of this swap. I think this is going to be a fun swap series.

@PolkaDotty your math sounds correct ...will confirm once I get my samples done.....I think you use 1/4" seams as well, yes?

perkl8r 06/26/2018 #

@PolkaDotty you are correct, 8 1/2 inches is what these blocks come out to if you use 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Do both blocks need to be exactly the same or can they be different reds?

perkl8r 06/26/2018 #

Please make each block you send different. They can have some of the same prints but use as many different prints as you can. Maybe use a minimum of 4 different border prints on each block. Mix the fabrics used so they aren't twins. I hope that is clear. 4 to 6 different border prints and 2 different black and white center prints.

Love b&W and a color -- finishing one at the moment (more complicated -[paper piece) it'll be a deligth to make these blocks and receive others from partners.

glad to have you with us @junemoon

Wondering if I ought to move the start date up so we can get to swapping......what say yea? I will change it tomorrow if no one objects.

perkl8r 07/11/2018 #

...ahhhh I see 3 more folks watching so I will wait to change the last day to sign up. I am happy this swap appeals to so many folks. I think I will set up more of the future rounds and allow 2 1/2 to 3 weeks to send on each round. These blocks are so fun and EASY to make. Enjoy!
