Description:

It's summer, but being rather broke, most of my traveling will be virtual this year. So here is the idea. You will keep a journal for your partner for two months, basically July and August.

What you will do is to exercise your way to your partner's house. You get to go one mile for each minute a day you exercise. I go to Curves three days a week, 30 minutes a day, so I would get to "drive" 30 miles on each of those days.

So, for example, if I got crescendo for a partner, she lives approx 1120 miles away. At 30 miles a day, can I make it to her house in 2 months? I don't know, but maybe that will encourage me to step up my exercising for the summer, instead of being lazy.

Write in your journal each day what you did. If you want to get really creative, map out the way to your partners town, and make a virtual stop along the way each night. Tell your partner where you are staying. Of course, you might end up in the middle of nowhere on some night. Do you camp out, or do you stop sooner? You can stop sooner, but you can't go further.

EXAMPLE: Hi, Sue, I exercised at Curves for 30 minutes today, and my first virtual stop was in Ventura. Since that is where I also work, here is a postcard from Ventura. Tomorrow I will exercise and be in Santa Barbara

Anyway, I thought it would be a fun way to take a virual trip and to make sure we all keep on the wellness track during the summer.

You will have a week to wrap it up and send it off to their partners in September.

I kind of like this idea...and I do need a lot of exercise. I hope I get someone overseas. lol

I like this idea. I do lots of exercise but have been slack the last few weeks due to having a cold and just plain making excuses when I could have gone. Sounds cool fun. By the way I exercise 5 days a week for about 2 1/2 hours so here goes.

this sounds like a good way to get me off my duff and doing something!!

DebP 06/29/2009 #

Very Clever Idea. On my watch list for now, but sounds like it might be interesting to do.

I'M LOVING IT!!! I was actually thinking today how to do a motivational PTing swap ~ but this is WAY better than anything I could have thought of. Thank you ... and it's definitely on the watchlist.

I am getting motivated just reading all of your comments. I am so glad to see so many people signing up for this. I think it will be great.

MistyLynne 07/ 2/2009 #

Yay - I have 2,713 miles to go! :o)

I love this idea!!!!

Woohoo! It is a good thing I like to swim! North America to New Zealand! What a great summer vacation! But can I really go 6,910 miles in 2 months? Well, at least it will be fun trying! I think I will work my way down the west coast from Oregon to San Francisco and take a plane from there - that way i can describe all the campgrounds from here to there, do some exercising on the plane, and then exercise (bike or walk) again from Wellington, the New Zealand capital, to Wanganui. what fun! I've thought about looking up New Zealand for quite a while. This swap has actually got me doing google searches and looking for geocaches in NZ. Thanks for coordinating it, User 3775!

My partner lives 1305 miles away (by road, according to Google Maps). Since I ran 2.6 miles this morning, I was just despairing at the thought of how I'd ever reach her - then I reread the description and remembered that we are getting mileage by minute. Phew! I'm so much closer already. :^)

My partner is in Michigan. Not that far from Colorado. Maybe I'll have to make a detour or two to make it more interesting. LOL

scrapkween 07/ 2/2009 #

so, are we supposed to write in this everyday? How many pages do you think it should equal out to be?

Starwatcher 07/ 2/2009 #

DebP, want to take a side trip to New zealand? :-) It seems we should be able to make an adjustment for getting to an area by plane - just think of the possibilities - we could be jetting all over the place, with exercise at the various destinations enroute to our actual destination (kind of like military hops. You aim for one place but sometimes the plane has to go somewhere else so you transfer, and transfer and transfer...)

Camelsamba, I think we are supposed to write in it each day, at least log in your miles, and then if you WANT to actually track your way to your partner, you can write about it. that's what i'm going to do - at least for part of it. There may be a few weeks when i will not be able to write anything as I'm having guests here, but hopefully that will be during the 'air miles' time of my journey. We walk our dogs every day, and I'm thinking I will start using the exercise bike as well to add more time. If i keep a log on the frig calendar, I can adjust my journalling as my time permits. New Zealand here i come!

HI, Scrapkween, Just write on the days you exercise. I am shooting for at least 40 days of exercising in two months. That is everyday, M-F, and weekends off. So let's say, at least 40 pages .

cynaemon 07/ 3/2009 #

Hi, Starwatcher, thank you for joining, and for your enthusiasm. I like your new idea also. We could do something like that for fall. Go different places and exercise. Or exercise enroute as you say. Good luck getting to New Zealand. I would have loved going there.

cynaemon 07/ 3/2009 #

Well, I am off to Orange Grove Texas, around 1540 miles. It is interesting that I am going to a place called Orange Grove, as I live in the middle of one. LOL.

cynaemon 07/ 3/2009 #

Hi, camelsamba, in your case, you will have to run the whole way! LOL.

scrapkween 07/17/2009 #

I had a great idea and just wanted to share what i am doing..........I am going to include clips of different excercise routines in my journal, as well as maybe some low fat recipes to try out. You can find all kinds of things like that in magazines!!!

camelsamba 07/22/2009 #

I found a tool that will do straight line distances (instead of travelling by roads ala google or yahoo maps or mapquest or...)

http://www.daftlogic.com/projects-google-maps-distance-calculator.htm

I mapped a route that takes me through two places I've vacationed. Anyway, my question: I'm already halfway to my partner so I think I will finish before the final date. Do I send it after I've 'arrived' (virtually), or keep traveling and send it in September?

scrapkween 07/24/2009 #

keep traveling =) I would like to see more of the country.....lol =)
