Description:

Button bracelets - I'm obsessed. I've been making bracelets on 1/2-inch, braided elastic (the type you would use when making clothing). Here is a link to what I am talking about:

http://diyfashion.about.com/od/diyjewelrymaking/ss/ButtonBracelet.htm

There are also fabric cuff types, as featured in the Winter issue of Sew Somerset magazine. And button-laden charm bracelets, if you are a super-duper bracelet maker!

For this swap, you will create one button bracelet for your partner. You can make a stretchy bracelet, button-covered fabric bracelet or a charm bracelet. Maker's choice and recipient's surprise.

Please join if you are a button-lover and do not join if you don't think you can meet the swap deadline.

How about wrist sizes?

smmarrty 07/ 8/2010 #

Great idea - you can list your wrist size here or on your profile.

(P.S. twobluecrows: How do I make my links blue?)

Oh,this sounds like fun! I have a whole bag of buttons I was just thinking would make an awesome bracelet!

I love button bracelets!

If at all possible I would like mine to be made with two colours only such as black and white, green & white, blue & white, red & white etc different tones of the colours are fine, but I'd prefer not to get a multicoloured one like the first link shows. No worries if my partner can't manage it - craft away!

slewis234 07/10/2010 #

can they be put on something other than elastic? like a denim cuff or leather cuff band? thanks

catchahug 07/12/2010 #

i have a large wrist 8 inchs around

smmarrty 07/14/2010 #

Yes, there are several ways to make these. Go to the links or type "button jewelry" on Google or Flickr to see different examples.

I prefer an elastic bracelet myself. Just in case anyone is curious. Thanks.

witchfire 07/14/2010 #

I'm not picky on style or color. Elastic, charm, cuff, woven or whatever design. The only thing I would prefer is it's loose around my very tiny wrist (5 (almost 41/2 inches). Not loose like it's falling off, but just not tight please.

BeadsbyGayle 07/16/2010 #

Are newbies welcome? If so, can the buttons be handmade instead of traditional store bought?

Marsha907 07/16/2010 #

My wrist size is 7 inches. I make my button bracelets with a thin leather cord & use at least some vintage buttons. I'm excited to see what others do.

smmarrty 07/18/2010 #

Yes, newbies welcome - there are a few already in the swap. Just make sure there is enough info on your profile for your future partner.

And I had a great day at the thrift stores - scored many bags of vintage buttons so I can't wait to get started.

And by the way, I'm in California so I can't hit the "make partners" link until after 10 PM my time. But I will so you'll have partners either very late that night or very early in the morning.

I always thought I had thin wrists but I guess not! Ha ha! 6 inchies for me.

CrazyCatChick 07/20/2010 #

I thought I had a little wrist also, 6 1/2" for me. I would love for it to be a little loose, not tight please.

kimmer 07/20/2010 #

wrist size is 8 inches... i do love fun bracelets! Im excited to play with this one!

smmarrty 07/20/2010 #

I'd like 6.5 - 7.0" - anywhere in there will fit me.

rubberaduckie 07/20/2010 #

my wrist size is 5 - 5 1/2"

tiggerkitn25 07/21/2010 #

Wow, my wrist is about 6 inches too. I thought it was bigger, lol. Something about 6.5 to 7 inches would be perfect so it's loose please. I prefer either monochrome or rainbow colors in order if possible, but will love anything really! I also love purple, teal, various greens, bright orangey-yellow. Anything goes!

mimmeli 07/21/2010 #

My wrist is about 6inch too.

Lauriez 07/21/2010 #

my wrist is about 7 inches. i'm sure that i will love any type of bracelet my partner creates for me, but i will say that i mostly wear alot of darker colors (not yellows, bright blues, greens, red, etc....so a bracelet in blacks, browns, or jewel-tones like burgundy, emerald, purple, etc. would get alot more wear! THANK YOU!!

smmarrty 07/21/2010 #

Just a tip - I find it easier to sew the buttons on the elastic (when making that kind of bracelet) while the elastic is not yet sewn in a circle/bracelet shape. I sew the last button/buttons on the seam to help hide it.

Hope this helps!

artandsoulfl 07/21/2010 #

I have a large 8 inch wrist. Thanks! :-)

3stairs 07/21/2010 #

I already have two made (a little obsessive, I know). Any French patriots on here? ;)

3stairs 07/22/2010 #

Here's my American/French button bracelet - I'm so proud of myself! http://post.ly/oEW7

jluca454 07/22/2010 #

I usually wear a 7" bracelet when it is not stretchy, my wrist is 6". I love vintage and dark colors.

shidesha 08/24/2010 #

I had surgery on my right hand and haven't been able to finish off the bracelet till now :( I didn't know it was going to happen :( I haven't done many swaps before so I hope I am not in trouble!

Posting it tomorrow :)
