Response: I'm glad you liked it! Yes it's all hand drawn at that size. Just takes practice...and really nice pens. The Columbus meetup I went to was years ago, I drove up from athens with my mom, but now that I'm living here I hope there'll be another. I'll be out of town this weekend (and fabric and fibers are very much not my thing) but thanks for the invite :)
Response: Glad you like! I bought the porcupine quills in bulk off someone in a facebook group for collecting odd things to use in my art stuff (and to include in swaps like this!)
Response: Thanks! The skull is actually part of a skeleton. Tricky to carve that small! You can see that whole one and some others at facebook.com/demonkittydesigns
Response: Yep, the prints are mine--I carved the rubber stamps myself ^_^ I used old charity stamps for the base (before they sent stickers they used to send decorative stamps) for the realistic perforations and stickyness. Glad you liked!
Response: Glad you liked! My stamps come from this guy: http://murphs-stamps.com/
he's great, he sells lots of unused old stamps at face value so they don't cost any more than buying from the post office, and you can even pick what themes you want. And if you happen to be in the Columbus area you are more than welcome to come play :P
Response: Glad you liked! Sorry for the freak out. If it helps, I don't think it's eating it, I think it's retrieving the rabbit it's master shot. That is what retrievers were bred for, after all. Frisbees are just a side effect lol thanks for doing this swap with me!
Response: Um, I haven't sent this yet! Whoever you received from, it wasn't me yet. Check the name on the envelope?
Response: I did indeed carve the fox stamp myself! I get my unused vintage stamps from Errol Murphy http://murphs-stamps.com/ It's a bit odd to order by email and pay by check, but I'll vouch that he's great. Face value lots of unused stamps, and he takes requests for themes. Glad you like!
Response: The backgrounds are mostly cut from old book pages, though some are scrapbooking paper.
Response: I know, I felt kinda bad I got someone in the same country as me for this one, but I tried to send enough variety that you would get some you wouldn't have seen. Glad you liked them!
Response: Always a hazard of mail art, you never know how much of a beating something might take. Glad the others made it ok, though.
Response: You're very welcome! Fair warning, the copper foil tape (particularly the half inch) can be hard to find and isn't cheap. You can find thinner ones at craft stores in with the stained glass making supplies, but it isn't wide enough to use the fancy scissors on. Amazon has the wide stuff, though.
Response: Glad you liked it! I was worried about not finding that many stamps on your themes, so I tried to make up for it with nice presentation.
Response: I'd definitely be up for another one sometime. I want to see what you make out of the goodies that I sent! Glad you liked it.
Response: Glad you like it! I was second guessing myself a bit, since I don't know the real 'official' zen tangle rules very well, I thought it might have too much structure to be a 'true' tangle.
Response: I did indeed. Been meaning to try another sometime too.
Response: you're very welcome! I sometimes hesitate to send the snake-y ones, I figure that's a bit of a specialized taste, but I figured you'd probably like it. And when I tried the embossing powder with my own stamp, it was like "omg, why didn't I think of this before?" Glad you like it ^_^
Response: Oh no! I thought I had sent volume 6instead of 4 for the last one... If you'd like to do a private swap sometime I can fill in the ones you don't have yet.
Response: Thanks! It's a bunch of different stamps. I've carved quite a few things in jars, but those are some of my best.
Response: Thanks! I totally don't remember which card you got, was that one of the hand drawn background ones?
Response: There's also some heironymus Bosch influence in those little guys. Also, there's my demon kitty icon/logo thing which I know you've seen.
Response: I just sent to you for another zine swap too and am really hoping I didn't send any duplicates... I didn't send the double issue of FMS (volume 5) for that one, did I? Glad you liked though!
Response: I'm not sure, I don't remember which card you got-- can you remind me?
Response: Copper foil tape, which also comes in brass, and yes indeed it is usually used in stained glass making. I use it all the time, I love the stuf! Glad you liked everything ^_ ^
Response: hand carved rubber stamp plus embossing powder. A cool combination! Glad you liked! ^_^
Response: I'm so glad you liked it! I was worried some of my work would be too dark for your tastes, but that one seemed to fit. I just carved the stamp recently and I'm quite pleased with how it came out!
Response: I wanted a set of stamps of things in jars, and they didn't seem to exist, so I made my own. Carving 'em is pretty easy, you should make yourself some too!
Response: Yep, my own hand-carved stamps. One of my specialties. Glad you liked!
Response: I'm not sure if a regular blender is strong enough to beat denim into paper pulp. I had access to a big one when I made that--also, I somehow managed to overflow the thing with blue foam, so beware of that as well. Glad you liked!
Response: I kinda decided it was time to destash a bit. I have so much of this sort of thing, some of which I'll use but a lot of which I just hoard... Glad you liked it all and thanks for hosting!
Response: you're very welcome! The swap got me to break out my custom seal, which I hadn't used in a while. And I have no shortage of asian ephemera, if you'd ever like to do a private swap for more! Or I could cut out the middleman and introduce you to my main source: skybluepink.com
Response: Thank you for my 1000th heart!
Response: thanks! I like to think I'm always getting better, slowly but surely. That's what practice is for.
Response: I think they were mostly from the dover clip art catalog. I don't think they expected me to cut up the catalog itself!
Response: You're very welcome! I got those in a swap or something like two years ago, but I'm really not a glitter person so I never used 'em. Glad you will!
Response: Haha no problem. Thanks for the heat!
Response: I'm sure there are tutorials on youtube that could get you started. And you can do it with tools as simple as an x-acto knife and a white plastic eraser! Glad you like it.
Response: Oh well. I tried to package it in such a way that it could handle the sorting machines so that even if they ignored that it'd be ok. Glad it made it!
Response: I know, right? I love those mossy textured wallpapers I found, I totally want more like those.
Response: huzzah! So far I have a backup plan (besides the straight hand drawn ones) for wild animals and birds, so I'll almost certainly be joining at least those ones. Looking forward to the others, thanks for hosting!
Response: Thanks! And minizines are way more fun than business cards, go for it!
Response: You just gave me my 1000th rating! Yay!
Response: glad everything got through customs ok!
Response: I actually prefer not using my real name online most of the time, so I totally answer to Katarina (or Kat or KN or whatever).
Response: you're very welcome! And trying new things is always good. Totally don't remember which card you got though-haha.
Response: I have quality carving tools, but the rest is just practice. Glad you liked it!
Response: I've been scouring thrift stores and antique stores for old/foreign language books in poor enough shape to take apart for a while now and love sharing my stash! And yeah, there are a few people now I have similar taste to that I often wind up in swaps with. Totally ok with that!
Response: It's actually an etching rather than a pen drawing. I began by drawing it, then used acid to etch the image into a copper plate, then pressed ink into the grooves on the copper plate, then ran the inked plate through a printing press with paper to produce the image. It's time consuming process but I quite like the results. Glad you like it!
Response: I've gotten pretty good at carving things-in-jars stamps! Maybe I'll carve you an empty jar one sometime so you can put whatever thing you want it it... Thanks for my 800th heart!
Response: you're very welcome! The quote is from the cappuccin crypt in Rome which is decorated with ornate designs of skulls and bones and things. Very cool place.
Response: Yay, my 900th 5 rating!
Glad you like everything. I love those Eid stamps, they're so pretty!
Response: I totally thought of the keys at the last minute--I have a ton of those but don't send 'em out often because they're so heavy it makes 'em pricy to ship. Glad you like everything!
Response: Glad you like it! I was looking for something that would definitely fit your profile (I wasn't sure about the book) when I remembered that stamp.
Response: Pain ol' hand-carved stamps, but each bottle is a different stamp. I have made quite a few 'things in jars' stamps and since they're separate I can use them in lots of combinations.
Response: Glad you like ^_^ I really like the graphic 45 stuff, and when it was new it was novel and interesting that they combined art nouveau and steampunk, but they're just too overused now. I may do the swap again, I quite enjoyed it as well.
Response: I don't remember which card you got but I often use copper or other metal foil tapes on the edges of my cards. You can find them at crafts stores in the stained glass making section.
Response: We should definitely do this again some time!
Response: My little secret: those notecards are from the dollar store! haha
Glad you liked.
Response: You're very welcome! It's always easy to please people with whom I have so much in common aesthetically.
Response: Heh, I always love finding a profile for someone who will really like my creepy cards so when I find a good one they tend to get extras. Glad you like it ^_^
Response: glad you'll be able to use it! ^_^
Response: good! I think I know what hpapened to the first one after reading your profile again--I think I tried to put too many extra papers in there and the envelope either got stuck in the machines or came open or something. Just speculation, but when someone likes papers in different languages I tend to over-share!
Response: heehee not quite carcasses--when they evolve (heh I'm thinking in pokemon terms)--when they Metamorphose into their adult form, they leave behind the exoskeleton of their nymph form, which is what I sent. Their adult forms look even cooler if anything, google to see what I mean. The right time of year in the right areas, those shells are on all of the trees. I found dozens last summer that I've been using in my art stuff ever since. I'm so glad you like everything! ^_^
Response: you're welcome! I've been on a stamp carving binge of late, can you tell?
Response: glad you're not sick of me yet :P
Response: yay!
I'm glad you like everything. I was really surprised I couldn't find any food paper (besides that one scrap of apple that was obviously supposed to be teacher stuff), I could've sworn I had some. Oh well.
Response: the syringe? It's from goreydetails.com they have a lot of great stamps.
Response: how flattering! I'm glad you like it.
Response: haha so this is why i did the nonpicky swap, I have no idea what any of the characters' names are! Glad you liked.
Response: yep, I carved them. Glad you like!
Response: Did I use the things in jars/bottles stamps on that one? It sounds like one of my apothacary shop type cards in which case all of the bottles/jars/things in jars are stamps I carved. Glad you like it!
Response: you're very welcome! And thank you for my 700th 5!
Response: nope, no clue what the text says I'm afraid. Glad you liked it!
Response: If you mean the postage-stamp-rubber-stamps, then yes I carved all those myself ^_^
Response: I'm sorry, I must've forgotten the note--which was the other swap? Just to make sure.
Response: glad it made it this time ^_^
Response: Yep--shrinky dinks are a ton of fun
Response: Definitely one of my themes of choice! Looking forward to more of the series, love it so far.
Response: hmm... I don't remember which papers I sent with this one, though I often include papers from ecopaper.com. I might've also included printmaking paper that I got from my dad's scrap bin.
Response: oh good, I'm glad you like it! I happened to be headed for the post office the day we arranged the swap so saw no reason not to send right away.
Response: Which card did you get? Does it have one of the language-y backgrounds, or something else?
Response: Oddly enough I make all my cards in advance, but I have a backlog of over a hundred that I've made but not traded yet to choose from so I try to pick which card a person will like best. However it sure helps when someone shares interests with me!
Response: thanks! Which one did I send you? Does your daughter make art as well? I might be willing to swap with her too :P
Response: To be fair I had tried doing woodcut printing once before which is Much harder, so going to carving erasers was a relief! You should totally try it though, it's a lot of fun.
Response: yay! I'm so glad you liked everything. The screenprinted airships are a set of four, I'm sure if we keep swapping you'll wind up with the full set sooner or later. Very looking forward to more of your printmaking swaps! I'll certainly be joining most of the free-theme ones, and any themes that inspire me, especially the ATC ones. I'm about to print my edition of etching ATCs!
Response: kitty paper? ...I totally don't remember what I sent you lol
Response: the embellisments and whatnot made it there ok? I was a bit concerned since it's the first one I sent.
Response: Thanks for the feedback! I considered sticky when making these but didn't have the materials yet. I like the idea of lickable since I like old fashoined things, I may have to track down some of that stuff!
Response: oh good! I like that one too but wouldn't want to send it to the wrong person, I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't've appreciated it.
Response: You just gave me my 500th heart! Yay! ^_^
Response: Sorry about that--that's what I get for using cheap cards. There might have been more papers but at least the important part got there!
Response: I'm glad you like everything!
Response: Glad you liked it! I'm glad things didn't get squished. I only just learned to make the shrimp, they're surprisingly easy--you can find instructions online for how to do it!
Response: wow, that took a long time to arrive! I'm glad it got there.
Response: heheh you got lucky, you just happened to have my most recent crafty obsession on your likes. Plus, good profiles mean good packages! Glad you liked it ^_^
Response: yep, that's the banana paper. Isn't it nice? I love the stuff.
Response: If you determine you like the foil tape you can get it in huge duct-tape size rolls at the hardware store--its intended for insulation. My problem is i accidentally got a roll that has ugly logos all over it so i can only use smaller portions like the ones I included. Glad you like! ^_^
PS if you'd like to do a private swap sometime just let me know :)
Response: ^_^ I'm glad you like the goggles. I've gotten quite positive responses to them (both my bf and I have a pair just like them) and they're Soooo simple to make! Pressing flowers is just my newest random thing to do so I thought I'd share.
Response: You got the one with the critters and the red I take it?
I want to have a rubber stamp of my demon kitty icon/logo made up (I already have a wax seal of it) but only for my personal use. I don't know, it's weird to think about other people using my critters in their art work.
Response: Bound to happen in such a specific swap--that's why I tried to send as much of a variety as I could, so at least some of them would be sure to be new.
Response: there's a tutorial as to how to fold 'em (as well as lots of printable papers for doing so) here: http://starrypaper.blogspot.com/2009/03/get-started-folding-instructions_10.html
It took me a lot of tries to get the hang of it!
Response: Wow, that took a long time to get there! Glad you like everything.
Response: You were in luck, we happen to have similar taste! ^_^
I've done a bunch of ATCs with anatomical images, I love 'em: http://KatarinaNavane.deviantart.com/art/Artist-Trading-Cards-64-152922741
Response: I found the tattoo card (with the appointment on it for getting the one tattoo I have) being used as a bookmark in a book I hadn't read in ages and threw it in at the last minute :P The matching matchbox just seemed to make sense, I had to do something to protect it and I couldn't very well use a plain box, could I? lol
Response: um...norsk (norwegian) and korean? I think, I don't remember which ones I sent you but that sounds right...
Response: Oh good! I wonder if it got stuck in the sorting machines?
Response: Ooh, which CD? I have all of Soapbox Heroes that I got from itunes but I only have certain songs from the others.
Response: I tried to pick one for everyone but it sometimes works better than others--thanks for having a profile i could easily pick a card for!
Response: um...I think you have the wrong swap, I sent you a bunch of ATC blanks.
Response: Yeah, the figure is hand drawn, cut out with an x-acto knife, and glued to a collage background. Glad you like it!
Response: The cloud effect was made by throwing white paper pulp made from cotton and abaca onto the still-wet sheets of paper made from the denim. I'm quite pleased with how the cards came out, glad you like!
Response: Yeah, wallpaper is great, neat textured papers and you can get 'em for free ^_^
Response: tacky glue and patience :P
Glad you like ^_^
Response: glad you like it! I've been a bit hesitant to send out those cards for fear that the swap-bot community so used to collage wouldn't 'get' the silkscreened cards, so I'm glad they're being received well so far.
Response: yep, at least partially hand drawn--the figure is hand drawn then cut out with an x-acto knife then glued to a collage background.
Response: I thought you'd like that one ^_^ I love it when the right card goes to the right person.
PS: it's kinda gross but the woodgrain pattern is kinda inspired by tapeworms encysted in muscle tissue
Response: The background is hand drawn--there's a certain kind of pen that you can use with embossing powder--the pens call themselves "glaze" embossing pens (they claim to be a way to emboss without using powders, but they work even better with the powders, and they look like sakura gel pens).
Response: congradulations, you just gave me my 300th 5!
lol Thanks
Response: wow that got there quickly! I try to notice when the post office does its job well instead of only when it doesn't.
Glad you like and hope you'll continue the series!
Response: Thanks for the offer, I'll direct people to you if they missed the early ones but want to catch up.
I'm thinking I'll be having a backup private swap for every one running a little later for both those who don't meet requirements (unless they're like megaflakers then I won't let 'em in either) and those who missed the last one.
Response: glad you like it!
I tried to log back in to my account but I've forgotten my account info and whatever email address I used wasn't my normal one cuz I couldn't get back in again. Tragic.
I think my sn was katarina_a_navane...
Response: It could be a male octopus. How do you tell? lol
Response: Well those are aged the old-fashioned way--by being old! The dictionary ones are from the 1940s.
^_^ Glad you like!
Response: what a crazy random happenstance! Glad it worked out so well ^_^
Response: hey that got there quickly! I only sent it on Thursday.
Glad you like everything ^_^
Response: glad you like! I had already made an inchie kit for a previous swap for which partners were never assigned, so this was ready to go long ago. I thought there were plenty of possibilities there ^_^
Response: Well I had to get it back somehow!
lol
Response: You can find instructions here: http://opane.com/luckystar.html though I must confess I didn't make that one myself but re-swapped it *blushes* I liked 'em too and couldn't make 'em myself (even with instructions, I suck at diagrams) so i included one of the ones I'd gotten.
Response: I don't remember what all I sent you but I'm pretty sure they were wallpaper samples. I recommend anyone who does papercrafting stop by their local paint/wallpaper store and ask them for their expired sample books, because they give them away for free ^_^
Response: Oh good! I know some people are all anti-teacher-reward-stickers, but I thought you would like that one.
Response: that got there quickly!
Glad you like ^_^
Response: glad you like it ^_^
Response: Yeah, sealing wax, like people would seal letters with back in the day. The post office is too rough on mail to use it properly now, sadly.
Response: glad you like 'em ^_^
Response: Yeah, the only origami things I can make are little samurai hats and balloon-ball things. Oh and frogs. I really want to learn to make those adorable little lucky stars but I'm terrible at learning from diagrams so I have to find someone to teach me in person.
Response: I don't mind sending to the same people a lot, but 4 in a row? Seriously? *pokes the partner assigning bot with a stick*
lol
thanks for putting up with getting so many of my cards!
Response: Glad you like 'em! I love dinosaur stickers which meant I had quite a few. I hope the ones on the album sheets stayed more or less in place, they were acting up a bit on my end.
Response: Thanks for having a detailed enough profile that I didn't have to guess at what you'd like!
Response: I'm glad you like my cards, it'd be hella dissapointing for you to keep getting so many of 'em if you didn't!
I try to send lots of different types when I get the same partner over and over.
Response: I call them "critters" lol you're right on the mark on that one. And I do cut each of them out. It's fairly time consuming, but I think it's worth it for the effect. Glad you like 'em!
Response: yay, my 100th heart! ^_^
Thanks
Response: I actually get those notecards in packs of 8 at the Dollar store--never woulda guessed, eh? Amazing what treasures you can find there. And thanks, I'm glad you like everything ^_^
Response: I don't see why my location is necessary (out of the over 200 cards I've received a grand total of 11 have had the sender's location on them), very few of my cards have titles, and all of my cards are one of a kind.
edit: I apologize, I did not realize that "location" was in the swap description. This is not typical for ATCs.
Response: It's tricky but I've done enough of these now that it isn't that hard, as long as the exacto knife has a brand new sharp blade.
Response: thanks for waiting to rate 'till I fixed my mistake ^_^
Response: that is weird! Well synchronized post offices, I suppose. Glad you liked the candy too!
Response: That's a shame--is the ATC intact? would you like me to resend?
I think I know why, I included these coin-thingies with bible quotes on them, and sending things like coins in a regular envelope (I later learned) can lead to things getting damaged.
Response: I thought you'd like them ^_^
We have similar taste, so designing 'em for you was easy. Glad you like!
Response: Yeah, I drew the background myself. Glad you like it!
Response: Which card did you get? I draw a lot of my own backgrounds
Response: glad you like the coins, i really didn't know what to do with 'em lol
Response: Glad you liked! No prob rating late, I got behind on rating things from holiday travel as well.
Response: I'm glad you like them, they're some of the best cards I've made. Thanks
Response: I'm glad you liked it, you're very welcome! Thank you for being in the swap! (PS: You'd never guess, those notecards came in packs of 8 at the dollar store :P I love 'em. Never know treasures you might find at the dollar store, eh?)
Response: That's fine, I just figured I'd get it off my to-do list while I was thinking about it. Glad you like!
Response: glad you liked ^_^
Response: i'm curious now as to which card you got lol
Thanks!
Response: Yeah, I have a lot of practice getting good seals but that stick of wax just wouldn't cooperate. It melted way too fast and the wax kept catching fire...
Response: Thanks! That card took me much longer than it should have, I started the whole thing over at least once, kept losing bits and having to re-cut them... But I'm quite proud of how it came out, I'm glad you like it too.
Response: the shadow effect on those cards was actually a mistake, (they are silkscreened by hand and the screen slipped and left the shadow) but people seem to like it. ^_^
You're welcome. I always try to get 'em in the mail as soon as partners are assigned.
Response: I'm pretty new here too and am as excited as you are. It's like christmas every day!
